It’s your birthday and you want to go somewhere that is a fun for a couple close girlfriends, has lots of good food and will keep you entertained for a long weekend? New York checks all those boxes!
It was a no brainer when i decided to go spend my 25th birthday in NYC with my closest girlfriends! New York has always been one of my favorite cities to go to. No matter what day of the week it is, there is always something to do, eat or see. Here are my top reasons on why NYC is the best place to spend your quarter century birthday.
Transportation
Originally i was debating between NYC or LA but ultimately NYC won simply because it is easier to get around by foot and public transit. NYC has an extensive transportation system but it is fairly easy to understand and you are able to get EVERYWHERE! Whether you’re staying in central NY and want to explore Brooklyn or have a bunch of places on your NY hit list, it is easy to get around with the subway.
If you’re staying for a couple days i would highly recommend getting the unlimited 7 day pass. You will get good use out of it and although areas in NY are all walkable distance to each other, you will eventually get tired and want to ride the train to most places. There is the option of purchasing a pay per ride, which is also great for short stays but can add up. If you’re in NY for 4-5 days i would already suggest the 7 day pass for $32 USD.
Brooklyn Bridge / Jumbo
Morning walks are great but it’s even better with amazing company on the Brooklyn Bridge taking in views of the NY Skyline, Statue Liberty and the Empire State.
Don’t forget to wander down to Jumbo and explore this cute little neighbourhood.
Time Square
Did you really go to New York if you didn’t step foot in the chaos that is Time Square? Despite the amount of people, this place is fun for even just a few minutes. With all the music, lights, billboard ads and people, it’s hard not to be in awe.
Soho
Walking around Soho is the best way to spend the morning – not only does it have incredible restaurants, cafes and shops but it’s very close to chinatown and little italy!
Museums
If you love spending time in museums as much as I do, then you’re in for a treat. New York has an abundance of art and it will take you a couple days to go to some of the major museums. As a Night at the Museum fan, I had to check out the Museum of Natural History. If this isn’t your cup of tea, there are plenty of other museums close by!
Hidden Restaurants / Rooftop Bars
There are so many hidden gems but my favorite were:
- Beauty and Essex – There are a couple locations (NY, LA, and Las Vegas), but the New York location has to be the coolest! The front of the restaurant is a small pawn shop with a secret entrance in the back door of the room. This was a fun place for the girls to have dinner as it has a trendy/cool atmosphere. The food was delicious and the cocktails were great. Although pricey, this place is definitely worth checking out for a splurge meal.
- 230 Fifth Ave – If you’re able to make it to 230 for the igloo bar, go because this is such a cool place to be with a stunning view. Not all rooftop bars provide everyone with a fluffy red robe to keep you warm from the cold NY winds! Grab a drink, hot chocolate with baileys will contribute to keeping you warm if the robe isn’t working and if you’re still cold, hop into one of the heated igloos.
Central Park and 5th Ave
What is a trip to NYC without going to the famous Central Park? There are so many routes to get to Central Park but one of my favorite starting points is at 5th Ave. Start by window shopping down the streets of high end stores and eventually making your way into the park.
Note: During December, Macy’s has an incredible window display and it really gets you in the holiday spirit.
Coney Island
A little further away from city center and on the southern tip of Brooklyn is Coney Island. During the summer, you’ll find locals and tourists at the beach or the amusement park (Luna Park). If you are travelling from city center, it is a long ride but so worth the trip if you’re planning on going to the beach or taking the family/hanging out with friends at the park.
Baseball Game
As you’re walking around NYC you’ll probably see a couple New York Yankee ball caps. Baseball is pretty popular here and if you can get tickets to a game, why wouldn’t you go for the full New Yorker experience?! Don’t forget to get some cracker jacks and hot dogs while watching the game.
NYC is an amazing place for a girls trip and an even better place to spend your birthday! If you’re looking for things to do, there is plenty and if you’re a foodie, this city is food haven. Be sure to grab your comfiest walking shoes – your feet will thank you at the end of the day!
